Use a sprayer to apply the stain - it's fast - and then you can use a brush/roller to push the stain into the wood.

I tend to agree with the above poster to spray on and then are use the paint brush or roller to further apply the stain it all the necessary cracks and crevices.

It might be best to check the application method suggested on your stain can/tub packaging can before proceeding.

Sometimes that can affect your product warranty. I’ve use the BEHR products and they success guarantee their product and even provide replacement product if their warranty year claims fail. This warranty guarantee was used in our pressure treated deck with solid stain. They supplied cleaner and replacement product when a product showed weathering and wear before the advertised interval when applied as directed.

Assuming this is pressure treated wood, make sure it is cured. Opinions vary on the time it takes but at least 3 months, make sure it doesn't have the "green" tint any longer. Clean with TSP. Thoroughly dry. After that, I think it is a personal preference. The issues with a sprayer are clean up & overspray. If those aren't an issue, it would be the easiest and quickest way to apply. Roller would be my last choice for stain application. I've never had much luck with it doing a good job. My personal choice would be a brush because it's easiest to control the application.

Hi! Sprayers are great, except for what goes through to the other side, which may be in your neighbor's yard. All my neighbors on my side of the street have wood privacy fences. One neighbor two houses down tried spraying from his side of the fence. Which would have been great except for the over spray and spray that went between the boards, creating a mess on the other's side of the fence. If you have access to both sides of the fence, you might want to protect furniture, sheds, shrubs, etc. When I sprayed a chain link fence at our prior home, I put sheets of cardboard on the back while I sprayed. Then, I reversed the process. It was fairly neat. Our wood privacy fence has someone else's property on three sides. When we agree on stain or paint, I plan on using a roller and brush for more control. Factor in your access to the other side, talk with any neighbors you share a fence with and decide what approach works for you. Good luck and stay safe!

You can get a sprayer at most paint stores. You will go through more paint though, Brush and or roller is a slower but good option

The answer of whihc to choose depends on so many facts. Can you easily mask off areas you don't want sprayed ? How large an area are you staining? Any fence I've stained, I've done with two brushes---medium and large. I don't know how well a roller would work for staining. Here's a video showing how to spray.

It is just a matter of your choice, and what you feel comfortable using. I always use a Brush because I have full control. Others use a roller system such as Paint Roller Pro, but if your fence is rough timber, that can be hard on the roller, or If you are competent with a Sprayer then that's the quickest way! Best wishes. You will have to make a start to be able to finish it......

You could put the stain on with a roller that should cover most of the fence then use brush for touch ups
