How do you remove a swirl pattern when painting a ceiling?

    You would have to do that before you paint. It is most likely a texture done with spackle or similar product.

    Sounds like a plastered ceiling. You could scrape it off before painting, or you could skim coat the ceiling to a smooth surface, then prime and paint.

    You will have to smooth the ceiling out first before painting. Prime first and then paint with a ceiling paint.

    How old is your ceiling? If it was put up in the mid 1980โ€™s or earlier it could be asbestos. The material used for texture contained asbestos until the mid 80โ€™s. If there is any question you should have it tested.

    If itโ€™s asbesto, disturbing it can cause the fibers to be released into the air and cause Mesothelioma. Professional removal is usually fairly reasonable and includes disposal.

    Asbestos can only be disposed of with a license and a permit. I have personal knowledge of a man sentenced to 10 years for unknowingly throwing asbestos floor tiles into the trash.
