I have a small kitchen with island in the center. I have painted all cabinets & island white, but am now thinking about painting island contrasting color. Will this make kitchen look even smaller or too busy??

I love that idea actually! We are planning our new kitchen and I am going to do the same thing. Not too busy if you stick to just 2 cabinet colors. The white that you already painted and the contrasting color of the island. You can always pick up the contrasting color in other pieces(accessories) in the kitchen. Or paint something else in the kitchen that same contrasting color, like the hood, or a pantry door. I don't think it's too busy if you keep the contrasting color to a minimum. This is where it adds a ton of interest. Have fun with it! Sounds like a great project!

    Hello there,

Why not try painting the Frame only or the Doors only in a contrast colour and see how you feel about it then?

  • Lots of people give their islands a contrasting color. You can go bold, or use a neutral. Depending on the colors you like, a bold blue or green might be nice, or a more neutral gray.

A darker color will ground the island and should not make it look crowded. I would go with a navy, green, or gray, depending on your color scheme.

No, it will not make the kitchen look too busy or smaller. It is a great look to have a different colored/contrasting paint.

Enhancing it with an alternate color that could be picked up with curtains and towels, etc would be a refreshing change from all white. If you have color in your backsplash, maybe echo it there on the island.

Most islands are a different wood species than the cabinets. Likewise islands are painted a different color than the cabinets. It actually opens up the kitchen since it does become a focal point.

I think adding a darker color on the island will add some color and detail to the kitchen. Worse case you will end up repainting it but if is works with other elements in that room I bet it looks sharp. Please let us know what you end up doing.

I just painted my 2 door center island a darker turquoise last week. I have a large kitchen that we had cabinets painted a soft white and had marble countertops installed. The floor is oak wood. It took 1 coat of primer and 3 coats of the turquoise but it turned out beautifully. Adds just the right amount of “pop” to the space. I’m accenting with a turquoise flower pot (with flowers), a vase I painted with same turquoise and a turquoise trivet I’m laying next to black glass cooktop. I recommend using a color you like or in my case brought the turquoise in from the great room where I had throws and pillows with turquoise in them. I haven’t regretted the color in my all-white kitchen.

Thanks sooooo much for all your responses! Going to paint this weekend!!

  • Paint it grey. All white might be "too much"

I think the contrasting color looks like a great idea. Maybe you could even put the island on a small area rug.

Hi Taylor, I think painting the island white will make it go with the cabinets. You can always paint it white and if you don't like it, paint it a contrasting color.
