We painted over our wood paneling. Just clean it well and use a good primer and paint. We used a combo paint and it came out great.
Hi there! The big thing with wood paneling is getting it really clean first. I would TSP and clean it like most people clean kitchen cabinets now before painting them as well. (Here's some more info about TSP: https://www.hunker.com/13420925/how-to-use-tsp-to-clean-wood)
After that because of how dark wood paneling is I would do at least two coats of primer before proceeding to paint. Good luck!

Hi MCP, I have also painted over wood paneling and it made a world of diffrence in the feel of the room. I did not fill in the grooves that were in the paneling but it could be done. Here's a pro's advice about the steps to take for a successful redo.

Make sure the paneling is clean and dry. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Kilz. Then paint like painting regular walls. Acrilyc latex paint will work. If the paneling has grooves you can fill them with non shrink drywall patching compound. Just put on enough to fill the grooves. Let it dry overnight. Next day use a damp sponge to smooth the patch. Then prime and paint.
Use primer first
We painted our paneling. Just use a good primer and paint! Use a brush for the grooves and roll the rest
Clean with TSP, prime (I used Kilz), then paint with a good full coverage paint & primer expecting at least 2 coats.
Just use a roller and go at it make shure it’s not coming off the wall
I did my neighbor's for her.... I used kitchen & bath semi-gloss paint that we added 1/2 c of baking soda to make it less glossy like chalk paint. I used a brush to cut in at ceiling and corners, and down the depressions, then I rolled the rest with a foam roller. Oh forgot a step, I washed the walls first with a big car sponge and Awesome Orange to get off the years of soot and oily residue from smokers. If you don't want the verticle depressions I have seen some fill those in with spackle, sand and prime the wall before painting.
Make sure you clean it well with a degreaser then seal it up with a primer. After that, paint as desired.
Dust or vacuum the paneling. Use a good primer, let dry completely. If you do not want the seams fill in with wood putty but that is not necessary. Use a good roller, like a purdy, you do not want roller marks. Ideally a spray painter would be best, but unless you are remodeling just get a paint color of your choice and roll it on. It may need two coats of paint.
How to Paint Over Wood Paneling
Wash down wood to remove all grease, polish and finish. Paint with Chalk Pain and then use a clear or antique wax to seal it.
