I prefer using Citristrip to remove paint. It has a gel consistency and stays on the surface for a long time so it has time to do it's job.
Methylene chloride strippers work fast and eat through almost anything
Citristrip safe stripper. Paste made to cling to vertical surfaces. Will remove layers of paint.
Here's a trick I got from a professional painter. After applying the stripper of your choice, cover it with plastic wrap. This prevents the moisture content from evaporating, and allows the stripper to work more thoroughly. Wait about an hour, pull off the plastic wrap, throw it away, and proceed to remove the degraded paint.
Citristrip is my favorite. Let it sit until the paint bubbles, then start scraping it.
