You need to do this outside in the shade on a wind free day. I would prime it first to make sure the second coat is going to stay put and adhere to the base.

  • Hi Edy,

i would recommend brushing your paint on. It is easier to ensure your coverage is even with no drips, and gives a nicer finish. Walmart sells Waverly chalk paint in many pretty colors, and that would work great for your project!

If you WANT to spray paint. Lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper to remove any shine. Prime with Kilz spray primer. Then spray paint your color. Several light coats will give you a smooth finish. You can also brush paint with the same procedure. Less wasted paint than with a spray.

Hello after proper prep cleaning sanding filling defects if necessary. Sometimes a primer might be suggested, followed Rustoleum suggestions.

    Rustoleum recommendations

    PREPARE:

Always work in a well-ventilated area. Cover the floor and nearby items with a drop cloth. Lightly scuff any glossy surfaces and wipe clean with a lint-free cloth. Use Painter’s tape to hide any surfaces you don’t want to paint.

    PAINT:

Using slow, back-and-forth motions, spray paint each item with several light coats of spray paint, making sure to overlap each stroke slightly. Apply 2-3 coats of spray paint, waiting a few minutes in between each coat.

    FINISH:

Let spray paint dry for approximately 1 hour before handling.

Tip: Use of 2X Ultra Cover Primer in White provides better paint coverage and color.

Here's a great tutorial on how to paint furniture with chalk paint. https://www.arayofsunlight.com/how-to-paint-furniture/ I wouldn't recommend spray paint unless you're very familiar with it.
