They are very slick and won’t take paint well unless you use a high adhesion primer. Or maybe glass paint?

I have spray painted plastic coffee can lids successfully. You need to use a paint and primer combo that specifically says it's for plastic. If you can't find the combo, you can use a spray paint primer that says it's for plastic, and then a regular spray paint. These days you can spray paint almost anything, you just need to get the right kind for the job and follow the instructions. Read the label carefully, or ask at your local home improvement store.

Select a spray primer for plastic and spray in light coats, let dry between each coat. Then spray with a paint for plastic, allow to dry between each layer. This avouds drips and runs.

Or if you find it, you can use the paint and primer all in 1. Check out Lowes and Home Depot paint section.

Rustoleum and Krylon have paints manufactured especially for painting plastic. Spray paints are usually the easiest!

Krylon and Rustoleum both make a plastic formula spray paint. I have used both with good results. Any spray paint that is formulated for plastic will work. I would scuff with fine steel wool, wipe down with denatured alcohol, then paint. If you are going to have a lot of wear & tear, consider contact paper or some type of applique rather than just straight paint as it does tend to scratch after a bit of use, even with a sealer, in my experience.

Lightly buff the surface with 220 to 300-grit sandpaper. Sanding is important. It gives smooth surfaces some tooth, allowing the paint to stick on better.

You’ll need to apply a coat of primer, preferably one that bonds well. This will help even out the surface of the plastic and give the paint something to stick to. The spray-on kind would be the easiest to use, but you can get the brush-on kind as well.

Spray paint works especially well for plastic, but you can use acrylic or enamel/model paint as well. It would be even better if the paint is meant for plastic.

Don't worry if the first coat of paint doesn't cover the entire surface; you will be applying several coats of paint. This is important, whether you are spraying or brushing the paint on.

Allow each coat of paint to dry before applying the next one. Alternate the directions you paint in for each layer: side-to-side for the first layer, top-to-bottom for the second layer, etc. How many layers you apply depends on the coverage you need. In most cases, you'll only need 2 to 3 coats.

  • I would fine a spray paint with primer/paint combo and use that. I would do one side with a few light sprays, turn it over and spray with a few light sprays again and then repeat 2-3 times to get a nice coat.

  • You can try a spray paint meant for plastic. If you plan to move or use or bend them after spraying, it might not stick though. Do a test first to see if it works the way you need.

Hello. The spray paint and primer Formulas as Rustoleum 2X are good recommended paints to try on plastics. However the more flexing and bending a soft plastic might experience could influence cracking and peeling. It depends on the use of your lid. Reading your product label carefully to see the suitable applications and following the directions would be recommended.

Hi Joyce, look for spray paint that is suitable for plastic. Rust-Oleum makes one in a variety of colors. Use a 120 - 150 grit sandpaper to sand the lids before painting so the paint has more grip.

  • I would try a spray paint, like a Krylon that has a primer built in. However, it still may crack after a while and after a lot of bending or movement.

You might want to spray paint for plastic or use contact paper. I feel like any other paints will crack.
