There is a Home Depot app that lets you take pics of your room then try paint colors. It's free.

I hate the process of choosing colors for the inside (or outside for that matter) of my home. I have found a couple of ways to accomplish it with the least stress. First, what colors draw you attention? Stand in front of the paint chip displays in your local hardware store and just see what area draws you to it first. Greens? Browns? Reds? etc. Once you have that, then pick up any number of chips and take them home. There you will tape them to the walls you are wanting to paint. This will help you eliminate any colors that clash with your decor, or that don't look as nice in your environment. Narrow it down as best you can. Ask friends to help if needed. Once you have a color in mind, or if you have several you can't decide between, go to the hardware store and get pain samples. They are fairly inexpensive and you can then paint swatches on the wall to 'study'.

If you need an accent color for ceiling, trim, or whatever, go back to the chip display and, from the main color you have chosen at home, go across horizontally from that chip, or vertically from that chip. Those will be the colors that can accent your main color.

Still not sure? Peruse magazines or online for the latest color trends to see if there is anything there that grabs your attention.

I hope this helps a little. Color for walls can be a bit intimidating but go with your gut. I did and was pleasantly surprised at how well it looks, as well as how it lends to a calm, relaxing atmosphere in our chaotic household.

Here is a picture of what we came up with. The walls are actually a little more brown than what you see. Still have some work to do in this room, but we are loving it!

  • Visualize what you want your room to look like. Do you have bedding of a certain color you'll use or maybe pillows? Any upholstery furniture going in the room? What colors would compliment them.

I like to go to the paint department of a hardware store and look at the booklets they have. When something catches my eye, I mark the page. Then I go back through and choose from the ones I liked. The advantage is that you can actually get those colors because the books go with the brands the store carries. The Behr premium with primer in it is worth every penny, by the way. I recommend it.

Judi - use your favorite color(s) as your base for a personal touch either as accent color or for walls. Just remember that color looks a lot darker when the whole wall is painted, so a pastel might be better than the darker version. And have fun - this is your house.
