Why does it seem too thick? Often gel stains go on like paint but have a top coat that you put on streaky with gauze that give it a faux wood look.
My problem is that i applied the gel in one area using a sponge brush. The next day i did another section, applying it with a rag, and that came out nicer. So i want to remove some of the gel from the first section.

The Minwax website says to apply another coat of stain on top of that and then once it softens up the dried stain just wipe it off like you normally would.
You can also use mineral spirits or lacquer thinner to soften the stain and wipe off.
Sanding would be the final option.
