Mixing first / second coat finishes

Can I paint the first coat flat and second coat satin for a bathroom? I have the same color in both finishes and need to make use of them.

Yes you can--as long as you do the flat coat first there will not be a problem.

I would do a sample first on a piece of drywall to see how it turns out before mixing the whole thing together and painting.

Yes you can, as long as both are latex, or the flat is oil and the top coat is latex. Just don't put oil over latex. The flat coat will act as your primer coat and having both in the same color will probably save you from using a third coat to insure coverage.
