What is the best paint color for this space?

I am usually so confident in what color to paint a room, but I am so confused with a 4 season/den. It has wood blinds, wood ceiling and brown carpet. I have tan overstuffed chairs and a rug with browns, tans and slate blue in it. There is a corner wood burning stove . There is a patio door and wall with with windows .

PersonallyI would white wash the ceiling to lighten the room up. The large window would look pretty as a light accent of the blue from the carpet. The balance should be possibly a slight version of the accent wall color.

For me I would Chunk up the fire place with a new rock face..the Faux Rock of course because its Lighter and many of them also have some of that slate blue in them, I would also paint out the wood with a white wash or a true glossy white color and then add a muted or softer tone Blue on one wall, yes just one wall. Further I would Buy a Mounting system for my TV and get it off the rather tiny table a table I could re-purpose somewhere else. If I liked the rug I would buy its bigger Brother and remove some of the Tan chairs and couches or play them down with colors lots of them, more baskets...maybe a large basket for my wood stove wood..a built in on the unpainted wall to help surround the TV..since this would be my escape room,I'd make it Multipurpose for Family game nights,or Seasonal Games around the TV,Football,Soccer, etal just a few ideas Hope they help you formulate a plan..Brainstorming is fun..but this is a room you can do just about anything in and still be Happy..I love this room..I'd Start with the TV Mount though first :-)

OOPS I forgot I would Take down the light blocking shades too..play up the view and light..its far too dark..let light come out to play one day by removing those shades and then see how the light suddenlt guides you to color and accessories..I took all of mine down and what a difference it made

If you are keeping your area rug, and the colours are to your liking in the space, then you could choose a colour from it...either the lighter shade (cool tan or grey??) or IMO one of the lighter blues (if that is too much colour, pick 1 wall to highlight.) I would personally avoid putting more brown. Just be aware that the blue tones will bring out the orange-y tones of the wood. I have a similar combo in my cottage. BTW, it is a warm and cozy room.

    • Jodi Jodi on Dec 30, 2016

Thank you... blue was my original thought but it didn't feel right...I love the cozy feel to this room also!

  • Susan Susan on Dec 30, 2016

i would paint it all white, including the ceiling and all trims - a pure white that is - and keep the blinds raised or fully open. if you like you could replace them with white straight fall curtains that are light and airy to allow all daylight to filter in and provide just a hint of coverage at night. the brick wall behind the stove should also be white to allow the stove to 'pop' and this will be your feature in the room. mount the tv on the wall as previously suggested. move the small multi-colored rug in front of the fire stove. i think you need more task lamps and the current tv stand can be used as a side table, perhaps with another one . the room will be much more inviting both in winter and summer and the cost of these changes is simply your panting time and the cost of paint. good luck

  • Jodi Jodi on Dec 30, 2016

wow, I hadn't thought of white. It would totally force be this room a new bright look! Thanks!

  • BabyBoomerSC BabyBoomerSC on Dec 30, 2016

I would paint the ceiling white and the walls a very light grey (Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams is a good color). The gray would go with your rug as well. I'd also paint all the trim white.

I'd mount the TV on the wall and purchase curtain panels that just hang on each side of the windows and remove the blinds.

  • Janet Pizaro Janet Pizaro on Dec 30, 2016

White is very stark. There are many other light colors to choose from. My suggestion is to go to the paint store and get paints chips in assorted colors. Tape them to the walls.Once decided buy samples and test on paper that temporarily adhears to the wall. Paint plays differently with lighting and decor.

  • Debra Burress Pichanick Debra Burress Pichanick on Dec 30, 2016

A very pale light gray tainted white.

  • Bonnie George Bonnie George on Dec 30, 2016

I would go with a silvery-blue, very light. Paint trim white and whitewash the ceiling. As already suggested, paint white on bricks and mount TV. Colorful pillows in blues and yellow will brighten space.

  • Bonnie George Bonnie George on Dec 30, 2016

Sorry, forgot the windows. I would leave the wood blinds surrounded with the white woodwork and would use two yellow and white geometric design panels on either side of your doors.

  • Caroline Engman Caroline Engman on Dec 31, 2016

If you want to brighten it up, then maybe turquise will fit. And maybe paint the window frames white.

  • Pauline Pauline on Dec 31, 2016

I would go with what looks to be a cream color in your rug. This will brighten the room considerably.

  • Phyllis Phyllis on Dec 31, 2016

I would paint the walls a lighter color and all the trim work white. It will make a big difference.

  • Rosemary D. Rosemary D. on Dec 31, 2016

I would first paint the wood ceiling a HIGH GLOSS white. I did that in a previous house and it really lightens up a room. if you want, you can use the same pain on the windows and the woodwork. then I would pick a lighter version of one of the colors in your rug and paint the walls.

  • Andrea Andrea on Dec 31, 2016

I'd go with a very pale grey or white including the window frames. I would do do a pale blue or grey for the window treatment.

  • Eroque022810 Eroque022810 on Dec 31, 2016

I would not damage that gorgeous ceiling with paint. I would replace brown carpet. Carpet will hide dirt from people coming through back door but it is also like a black hole sucking up all light in the room. You have a dark wood stove a large TV that of course is black so right there you have 3 dark things sucking up light. I would put down a laminate wood floor in a light color. I would white wash the brick wall behind stove and I know that there are paints out there so you can if you want repaint stove but I believe that if you lighten the bricks that would make a huge improvement. And the floor just makes sense. I see you have a dog so using a swiffer every night isn't a big deal. Once you choose floor, then pick a light color for walls. Please don't re-paint wood. That makes room warm and cozy. Oh and your pretty center rug is to small for that area, it really should be larger. I know that I saw a post here that explains the size it should be, plus the floor will be chilly in the winter so a larger rug would be helpful. So right now you may be asking yourself ,then why change out carpet? Because it's too dark and a light one would show all the dirt people bring in from back door as well as the dog paw prints. It's a gorgeous roo it just needs lighter stuff. Remember it's easier to do bricks than to sand ceiling so you can paint them since you shouldn't paint over the sealant that's there plus you need to prime then paint and you would have to rent a scaffolding unit. Just think about it sit in the room and ask yourself what is it that is bothering you. Maybe it's just the weather. Listen we just moved about 10 months ago and I lived with the light walls until I was ready to have L shaped L/R&D/R painted and had baton board put in and carpet changed. I didn't want curtains nor blinds in LR but hubby did, I just put up white ones to match trim and hate it. I'm taking them down and it's only been 3 days. You see I knew I didn't want them and should have listened to myself. He is free to do whatever he wants in family room that's his space. I tried but I could kick myself. So really think about it and remember we all don't live with you we offer our opinion but we only saw photos. You asked but you are there 24 hrs so do what makes you happy. Good luck, happy new years and God's blessings.

Sorry but question why is TV on that small table? Why is the wall behind wood stove the only decorated area and why with pretty lamps? Also is there a full wall opposite the wall of windows or is this just a half wall or no wall at all? I was just wondering if you could rearrange chairs and TV so that there aren't 2 focal points next to eachother. Since windows have blinds you can close them if the light is hitting the TV while you watch it like a media room. Plus you could play up the wall next to stove with a wood holder and maybe another chair for enjoying it when on. But only focus on that wood stove if you use it otherwise it's a waste and that gives you a wall for art work that you like. I still think that you need another sitting area a chair to match yours maybe with a pattern on fabric that you love. But make sure that the TV can be seen by that person. Because of height of windows I wouldn't worry about looking outside. A cute tall table with chairs and a place to sit and see outside would be nice you could just talk or have a place to have a snack and something to drink then you could see outside. Then that would balance that wall and make that the focal point not the wood stove. OK I could go on forever but you know your budget and just do a project by priority. Bye.

I bought swivel chairs so goes around 360. So you do have an idea blue on the wall opposite windows would bounce light around so start there. It's just one wall jump in, go for it. Live with it and then see if you want to continue with your instinct. Oh I thought chair could closer to stove under window's. I didn't expect another large piece of furniture a one person chair. Then save up for a chair in a blue shade maybe with a pattern. Why not place both of the chairs you have side by side to make a mini love seat. The back facing outside door. Now you both face TV and in future you can add an other chair. Room doesn't appear small it's the layout and that it's dark. Your paint choices will darken room,if that doesn't matter then go for it. Slate blue is a gorgeous color. What colors are the walls know they appear light tan/beige. You may just keep those walls just as they are. What wall was going to be slate? I believe that if you like the color you want to see it to enjoy it every time you are sitting in the room. I can't remember if I told you that I choose organic green but I love the color and with trim shaker style. I love it so much I asked for no one's input so as not to stick to "acceptable traditional colors". You only live once live with no regrets. A can of paint it's not a huge investment if you can do the work yourself. If you try the love seat way turn carpet around so it's under your feet and if it feels like it's the place you want then eventually get a coffee table. I'm rooting for you. I actually really arranged my furniture last night. I have tried everything. I had it in mind where it would all go and it's a leather sofa recliner on ends. Well it can't be by a vent nor windows. Last night I said the heck with this I'm putting it further from a vent and by windows, since they face north I get no direct light. I'll have to sit in every spot because it faces into dining room with a window! It's only been 10 months of us being here and this is new furniture. Help me, what kind of coffee table does one use with these sofas I added them since he likes that sofa looks the same regardless and it has gorgeous stitching. But the table has me perplexed. So I have a dance floor in the middle of room. It's a decent size 15×17.5. And did I mention I have a wall piano. Yes my son plays. It just takes time. I first picked paint then it took off from there that's why I say do the slate wall and watch it unroll just don't share with family and friends. Everyone has his personality go with yours express yourself. Happy new year! If you go on face book you can see my rooms unfurnished by companies name,M.E.N.D.

I think you start with what feeling you want in the room. It looks to me like you're drawn to warm, cozy colors. Although grey is the "in" thing, it may not be for you. I'd consider colors in pumpkin or apricot. You can stay on the light end or a tan with those undertones. You can easily find some pillows that will blend those colors with your rug color to pull it all together. I'd also keep some black accents going throughout the room to pull the wood stove in.

Your room already has great "bones" with the beautiful ceiling and cozy, neutral furniture, not to mention the gorgeous windows.

Best wishes with this fun project!

I would paint the walls a very pale mango with white wood window trim. I would scratch the rug, and go with an off white and taupe swirl. This should be the length of your sofa, and placed right in front of it. Fireplace could be very pale taupe. A soft cornice over the length of the windows in taupe with dk mango and white trim or print. Carpet can used but if replace, a pale taupe or wood floor

If you keep the rug, I would pull the light blue. Another option would be to pull a shade you like out of the brick.

  • Debbie Debbie on Jan 01, 2017

I like a very lite yellow. It goes well with brown , red, tan ect... and it brightens up the space, My sisters always tease me because that is my go to color ....it always looks so clean

  • Nancy Nancy on Jan 01, 2017

I have a similar room with similar color scheme. It is currently a very pale shade of blue. I am about to paint it a very pale shade of yellow. Colors of nature usually blend well together. If you don't like what you select...you can always paint it again.

  • Rose Rose on Jan 01, 2017

I just painted my office a very nice greige color- Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter. It is a nice light neutral color. I think it would look nice in your room too.

    • Lynda Lynda on Jan 02, 2017

That's a good color! I love the ceiling but I'd whitewash the bricks. Maybe some curtains that just cover the edges of the windows, a bench seat underneath wi cushions in the curtain fabric and nice baskets for wood. I think somebody else mentioned putting the tv on the wall, maybe with a mantle below, and a nice chest (recycle and painted!)

  • Nancy Flemming Nancy Flemming on Jan 01, 2017

Lots of good suggestions. I would change out the light bulbs and put in LED daylight bulbs. Raising your blinds will allow a lot more light. Either choose a colour from your brick for walls or go with the blue from your rug, white wash the brick with a little wall colour added. If you choose to take out your carpet look at the drop and go vinyl plank flooring, I have just been in a home with this throughout, (they got the idea from a show home) it looks great and so easy to keep clean, it is also a lot warmer than laminate. You could also make a bench to run along the window from fireplace, so you could tuck under fire supplies, cover with brighter colour cushions in blue, yellow and browns to keep it cozy. Leave the end by your chair as a side table. Striaghten your chair by the door, hang the tv on the wall, remove the mantle thingy behind the wood stove if possible, it just doesn't work. If you like the mantle effect put one on the tv wall a bit lower and hang tv above it. Good luck let us know what you decide and a picture when finished.

  • Patti Patti on Jan 01, 2017

I would hang the t.v. on the wall on a swivel mount. If your carpet is in good condition, I would remove the area rug and bring in bright colored pillows, new or refurbished lamps and some nice art. Might look nice painted a slate blue or mossy green, but light shades

    Good luck!

just had my lr and dr painted ivory after years of dark tan. i love it!! your many brown elements and wood will keep the room cozy even with the lighter colour. that ceiling is fantastic. i would stay with neutrals to highlight the ceiling.

  • Mary-Ann Mary-Ann on Jan 01, 2017

The biggest change could be made by painting your woodwork white. So much brown is a bit overwhelming. That is a lot of work so some nice patterned drapes or valances would help a lot. I agree with the person who said to whitewash the brick-the fireplace gets lost with all that brick. Alternatively, making the mantle more of a presence would be a step in the right direction. I would lower the mantle (fire regulations permitting) and make it chunkier, perhaps painted in an off white. Then take off all the little things and add a large wreath on the back wall which could be changed out with the seasons. I love soft blue or aqua with oak , but definitely not yellow. So in closing I would start with the fireplace and work out...Nice furniture and bones, just needs some tweaking.

  • Bbunny42 Bbunny42 on Jan 01, 2017

I like the idea of ivory/cream walls and woodwork, then use this to whitewash the fireplace. Lose the mantle and blinds (if possible), but add curtains if you need privacy. May I suggest visiting a fabric store to find a fabric that "grabs" you -- perhaps using colors of mango, blue, yellow, green -- and go from there. Perhaps print curtains, striped and dotted pillows utilizing the same colors. And perhaps a "tweedy" or tiny-stripe rug with same colors. Or find a rug you like and use this same process. If you think you might like colored walls, get a paint sample (about $3) and paint a 2'x3' posterboard, then thumb tack it around in different locations to check lighting and determine if you really do want to paint your walls that color. This does work and can save costly mistakes. Don't paint walls grey -- it will be dark and depressing. Also, mount the TV on wall and perhaps make that wall part open bookcases and part bookcases with doors. It looks like you have a bit of clutter that needs to be stored somewhere besides in floor. White bookcases, but the books and decorative objects on shelves will add quite a bit of color. Lots of good ideas from HomeTalkers -- we can't wait to see pictures of the finished room! Wish my living room was this big!

  • Map3535615 Map3535615 on Jan 01, 2017

You have a great start with the colors in your rug! You just need more of it! I also have wood trim throughout my house and it can make a room seem choppy if the wall colors are too light in contrast to the trim. If you paint all your walls the same color that would be good since you have so many doors and walkways in your walls, it would make it more cohesive. Your carpet is new and nice, your ceilings and brick and trim would make much more sense if they were to pulled together with a richer color. Think about what you want your eyes to be drawn to when you walk into the room, that would be your focus. Right now what you see is the rectangle of blue in the middle of the floor, but everything else is lost. I'm guessing you would have the fireplace and tv wall your focus. Maybe a longer rectangle furniture unit under your tv hung on the wall to balance the large window on the other wall. Love your furniture! A shade of blue/gray would be nice. Spread that color around!

  • Chrissy Chrissy on Jan 02, 2017

I think that with all that light coming into the window, you can afford deeper tones to create more of a comfort cave. Any so go wild with a deep toned wall picking up the tones of the brick, and the adjacent wall a sensuous medium gray. A framed piece, even a mirror, over the TV, would pick up more light.

I'd go with a nice rich grey tone ...maybe dove grey or a cadet blue if your brave since its more like a blue with a grey undertone than a true grey ...to blend with the colors in the rug and to offset the tan and brown ...( could I say grey more ?lol ) ......you have a great space to work with ...I envy you the brick and woodstove : )

You've got a great teal blue in the rug. Use it! Blue - the colder it is the better because all other colours are warm and earthy making the whole room cozy enough!

  • Banjojane66 Banjojane66 on Jan 06, 2017

I can't say enough good things about the beautiful layout of this room! I love the fireplace in the corner. Your wall on the left looks lonely, so I would put the plant on this side, unless it would die without direct light, (I don't know how to keep my plants alive, so my fiancé does all our gardening).

This is what I would suggest... maybe you could purchase a teal blue couch or loveseat to match the colors of your teal rug! Move the couch, or loveseat in the middle of the room, facing the fireplace and the TV. Let your chairs sit on each side of the couch. Then put the teal blue rug in front of the couch and buy a small credenza to place behind the couch (or) loveseat.

My view is of two rooms from one. Once you have re-arranged the furniture, then you can divide the windows with two different colors of drapes!

Also, the space between the sliding glass doors and the credenza can give your love one a place to play and a bed to sleep in while he or she is eating their bone!

( Buy he or she a new teal rug too!)

Adding more colors to your wall of windows will give you a better perspective of the room. A printed drape of similar colors might help divide the image of two rooms! (one of the drapes in the blue and the other set of drapes in a color to warm this section of the room, like medium reds or mauve or almond! (because (with all due respect), you might have cold air coming from the bottom of your sliding glass door in the winter).

I'm not a decorator, or a contractor, but someone who loves the winter time weather. Yeah, you guessed it, I was born up North, but now I live in South Georgia. No snow, but I found my sweetheart here.

Hopes this different path of views helps you in any way. Happy New Year!!

I like the idea of a soft gray with blue backnotes in it.
