I have also found the heat gun to be more than worth its low price. It is one of my favorite tools.

I used a heat gun on the original bannister in our 1840 home. It works well, but you have to be careful not to scorch the wood.

Get some high powered stripper. Glob it on in sections take siran wrap and put on top of stripper let set until it starts bubbling. Then start stripping. There is no easy way . Lots of time and patience. We did ours 40 yrs ago. Plus we stripped the dowels too. Tooth brushes come in handy. We started with red devil gel and worked down to the thin remover.

Get one of the sponge buffers they use at a nail salon. Its easy to hold and fits into nooks!

Banisters are very expensive at the local do-it-yourself stores. I would just replace it unless it is very unique.

I would use a small sander, on of them that fits in your hands with pointed nose, it fits in sharp edges and on the straight corner bits, you will get the paint of in no time and the wood will be nice and smooth for you to put varnish or paint on. I got a real cheap one and done cupboards and stuff with it in a very short space of time stripped back to the bare wood. You do get some dust but if you attach the hover to the end bit it will be so much less messy.
