Paint the paneling?

I'd like to lighten this room. I'd like to paint the walls & paneling the same color. Do I leave the ceiling alone?

You might consider painting the ceiling and leaving the walls alone. I have wainscotting on my bathroom ceiling and previous owners painted it blue. It was not a particularly dark blue, but it sure seemed to suck up light. Painting the ceiling really brighten the room tremendously.

I'd paint the walls and ceilings both white and that room will look absolutely HUGE!! The dark ceiling won't reflect the light enough even if you paint the wainscotting. Go for it, I have a feeling you're going to love it!

My walls and ceiling are painted the same shade of a warm light tan color, with all of the mill work (window trim, doors, baseboards, crown molding) painted a soft white. I absolutely adore it! A stark white ceiling,especially in a large or open room, is so expected and sterile. Painting the large "fifth wall" a fashion or decor color is just a bit unexpected without being shocking. Everybody is going to give you different opinions so I hate almost to say I would not paint the ceiling. It is beautiful. I light up the window treatments first and perhaps add rugs and maybe paint the mantel to eliminate the visual stop it creates and see if that lightens things enough, but changeable easily. You could always paint the wood wainscot later if you want but once you do, you can't go back. After living with all the wood, all solid may seem a bit cold to you..even lacking character. Just my thoughts. This is an amazing space and good luck with what ever you do to make the space what you desire.

Moxie is right, you will get lots of opinions. I would just suggest that you try doing just a little at a time. Your house looks vintage...60s modern? You can always change it more, but you can't always undo. And vintage in a vintage is very popular right now. Start by first painting those dark doors a lighter color. Then remove those wooden blinds and either put up nothing, a frosted film that is put up with water and can be removed later and at the most, a sheer. Get a snazzy, thick, long thread light rug to go in the living room...nothing skimpy...make it large enough for a large furniture grouping! Change your lighting to "white" bulbs instead of yellow...this will cut down on the golden of the wood. In TN you have to have a fan but pick a lighter one...perhaps one with a lattice look....less dark...more modern...like a pulley driven stainless steel one. With some unique (and yes top of the line) accessories, you can keep this house in its original but lovely style!

I would paint the walls & paneling a soft white. I would NOT touch the ceiling at all.

It is your ceiling, paint it. Or if you are a glutton for punishment or rich enough to hire someone, white wash it. You can even tint the white wash to match the walls. I think I would paint the ceiling an off white and the walls a deeper shade of the ceiling but not a dark color.

You are questioning the ceiling, so it's maybe something you're not real happy with. Good advice to take it slow and make a few changes at a time, but for me, personally (and I'm not living there), I grew up in the paneling era and really dislike it. So, obviously, I would paint it. A major change to create a totally updated look. :) AND, you have a gorgeous floor that in my opinion 'fights' with the ceiling.

Love it painted! I would, if it were mine, match the color of coverings for both windows...love the color, teal?, so would use the same color on the other window.
