Painting a ceramic tile floor

My bathroom is tiled with a very rough tile, almost feeling like dust underfoot, and I would like to paint it. It's a fairly small bathroom, long, a bit narrow, but a square section where the sink and toilet are. I don't think it would be a long, drawn-out job. I just need to know what kind of paint I could use to make it shiny and durable. I could go to the paint store and find out, or I could ask any of you out there if you've already done this, and how you did it. Thanks everyone.

  • If your floor tile is already rough under foot it will remain so when painted. Any good quality acrylic paint will work. But its not suggested. Tile floors are not organic. Therefore will not support mold development. Once you paint the surface the paint itself will support mold development. Even if you add or use products that suppose to prevent mold growth. If the floor gets damp and wet on occasion and stays that way for several hours, You will find that the corners will begin to develop dark stains. And scrubbing it away will be hard on the new finish and could cause it to fail. You may find it better to replace or to cover over with a vinyl sheet product or tile. Also once painted your stuck with it. It will not allow you to adhere any stick down tiles later on as the adhesion of the paint is really quite poor. Cleaning it once painted is also difficult as it will wear down the finish. Might look ok for a short while, but eventually it will fail.
