Painting laminate to mimic granite in kitchen

I am doing my countertops in my kitchen and have a question for those of you who have done it. I put down the primer (white) and have put on 3 different colors of craft paint. I need to know if I MUST cover all of the white primer (Kilz) or let some peek through.
This picture was taken prior to starting.

I recently painted my counter using white Kinzeer primer.Depending on what you want your counter to like will determine if you want some white to show through. I don't think it will hurt anything because you will need to polyacrylic over it anyway. It's a matter of taste. Good Luck. Oh, make sure you use at least three coats of sealer, four is better yet.

Lori,I should have added that to be patient and let the counters dry and cure for at least a week after the final coat of sealer.The sealer dries quickly but the cure takes about a week to harden. patience is a virtue. lol But, the finished product is worth it.

Lori, just go for it! I found when I was dabbing away that it was actually fun. My base coat was this awful orangey color that was not what I thought I wanted. I went at it with 2 different browns and blended the whole thing and now it really looks sharp.The orangey color faded into the background and actually changed color with the 2 shades of brown. I looked much better after I sealed it. I did use a polyurethane only because I wanted the slight yellowing that it can make. That was after 3 coats of polyacrylic. I don't recomment the urethane. The smell will drive you out of the house.I won't do that again.Look at it this way: It's only paint. You can always do it over.Laminate is so durable,it will hold up to anything. hang in there......be brave

I love it!! Good for you. I am amazed at how easy the whole process really is. I am equally amazed at how scared I was to try doing it. lol Now I have no fear, one project down many more to go. You are feeling proud and rightfully so. This counter is really beautiful.

Has anyone had this application down for any length of time?? I'm wondering about the longevity of the finish being cleaned especially on kitchen counters, since they are used most heavily. Does disinfecting ,cleaning products, acids from fruit, vinegar splashes things of that nature erode the finish. I want to do this with my kitchen counter, was told since the concept is relatively new there may be problems with the sealer lifting, and the paint coming off in heavy use areas.. Can anyone comment on this??

I have had mine done for about two months and have not had any problems. I do use cutting boards for most jobs and I don't put anything hot on them. Being laminate they shouldn't have anything hot on them anyway. Nor do I use straight vinegar. A weak solution might be o.k. but be sure to dry well. There are two coats of polyacrylic and one coat of polyurethane so they are protected. I just don't want to take a chance on ruining them. Other than that wiping down with disinfectant wipes or just soap and water does the trick. So far they still look great. Hope this helps. The key is to do many coats of sealant. I will be doing more coats in the fall when it cools down. You could also use the same stuff they use on bars and bowling alleys. It's a resin and is hard as nails. Usually needs two people,though.
