Painting over a thrifted oil painting
I have an oil painting that I found at a thrift store. The colors are super
dull so I want to brighten it up. Can I paint over the existing oil base paint with oil or can I use the oil pencils.
Thank you
Mary

Hello yes I expect you can touched up to your own preference. You can use acrylics or oils
Generally the surface should be spray sealed at completion and you can work above that. If you do encounter a problem you could put a clear coat on and go from there.
It is my common practice to use spray sealer’s while in progress while creating a painting and paint on top of them. It can add to a transparency type technique with colors layering in a beautiful way.
I have both —-touched up paint- canvas damage aquired during moving and painted over thrifted art to reuse the canvas and frame.
Best wishes on your restoration.
For best results, stick to the same medium, so you can use oil paint or oil pencils. You might give the painting a light cleaning with cleaners that are safe for it.
Hi! I would clean and then seal it before painting over it. Years ago it was a common practice to paint over old artwork because canvases were so expensive! So upcycle and have fun! I would do a base color first, but, that's just me! 🙂
Hi Mary, hope this helps you out, You should never paint over oils with acrylics. The reason for this is that acrylics are essentially a plastic and not breathable. Oils, however, release gases over time. If you paint acrylics on top of oil, the released gases will cause the acrylic paint layer to crack and flake off as the gases try to escape.
Hi Mary, oil paints or pencils will both work.
You should be able to go oil over oil but you will want to clean it first. I would start with canned air or low setting cool on a blow dryer.
Yes, I've done this with my own artwork. However, as stated above, you want to use the same medium. So you just want to be sure the original is oil before you start.
Yes, use oil paint. Be sure to clean the paint well so your paint will have good adhesion.
Yes, you surely can. Both will work.
If it is truly an oil painting, you'll have to either continue in oil or seal it. Acrylics will not stick to oil and they will peel off eventually.
Another thought is to take out all the staples, reverse the painting and go at it.
You should be able to paint over it with the oil pencils just fine.
You can get some oil based paint at Michaels or Hobby Lobby and paint right over it. The paint usually comes in a tube and it is by the picture frames.
Painting acrylics over oils is not recommended by manufacturers or professional artists. The acrylic paint won’t adhere properly to the oil paint, and it may peel. You can successfully paint oils over acrylics but you shouldn’t use acrylics over oils.
Use oil paint.
I think I would first repaint the canvas with black or white to give it a base, I would use acrylic paint.
