I've read articles about painting fabric and some people advise adding liquid fabric softener used in the laundry. Here's a link from right here on Hometalk with info about how to:

Mix equal parts fabric medium and latex paint for the main fabric-painting solution. For the first coat, mix in half as much water, for example, stir 1/2 cup water into 1 cup of the paint-fabric medium mixture. The water thins the mixture and makes the fabric absorb the paint better.

I mix baking soda with latex paint to get a textured look. If you don't use too much (keep adding to the paint as you go) it can look like a light leather.
