I like chalk paint myself. You would apply wax after painting to seal it. I would test a spot with the colors you like and see if you need to prime, most times you don't. Have fun!
There is no easy answer to this, a lot depends upon the effect that you are looking for as well as what kind of time you are willing to put in, the amount of wear and tear the piece will get etc. I like using chalk paint as it doesnt require a lot of prep work (sanding/priming etc) before painting, but it does require being sealed with a wax or polycrylic afterwards. Fusion paint doesn't require any prep either, nor does it require a sealant...but the finish is a matte finish, so if you want shiny you need to glaze or poly afterwards. If you are ok with pre work, sanding and priming the drawers will allow you to choose the paint finish and colour you want.
You can use chalk paint, but you will then have to use some sort of product to seal it....wax, polycrylic, etc. I still love using good old latex paint on furniture. It is easy to use, much less expensive than chalk paint and once you paint it, it is done. I always recommend using one coat of primer on furniture....especially if you are painting something white. It will take less coats of paint, and help the paint adhere better.
I've just started using it, although I've heard really good things about it. I did a web search for retailers in my area and have done 2 small projects so far.
