There are now paints that have been formulated for cabinets. It is a thicker mixture than latex and is self leveling for a smoother finish. The problem is that for a whole kitchen, it's pricey. You can use a good latex paint by using a good primer. Primer is very important, along with taking your time, removing the doors and hardware and sanding. I use foam furniture rollers. Your local paint store can assist you with everything you need.

I am in the business of re-doing kitchen cabinets. We use PPG/Porter Paints, Advantage 900 in semi-gloss. LOVE it! It is soap and water cleanup, but VERY strong and durable. Just make sure you do your prep work properly before you begin painting.
