I've read dozens of homemade recipes, tried many and haven't liked any of them. Instead, I buy a jar of chalk paint at Walmart and mix it with regular latex paint or craft paint to get the color I want. It's fairly inexpensive and easier to mix. Only mix small amounts unless you are doing a large project. I try to only mix what I'm using that day.
The recipe I use is 1 c latex paint, 1 c plaster of paris and 1 c water. Mix very well it goes far. Have used black and grey paint several times no issue. But when it was white paint and applied to medium wood dresser brown bled thru After first coat. I later read that is a common issue. So you may need prime first for that scenario. Hope this helps.
