What you paint it with is up to you. I would seal it with multiple coats of a polyurethane type top coat. It is very durable. My dad refinished his moms clawfoot table and gave it numerous coats of polyurethane in the late seventies or early eighties and it still looks brand new. I now have it and it is still perfect. It is easy to clean, I just run over it with a damp rag and dry it with a soft cloth and it is clean again!
I love Fusion Mineral Paint or Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint. I use the Wipe On Polycrylic that works well with both products for durability.
Annie Sloan is another really good chalk paint to use followed with her wax that she makes.
