Hello Emma: Well I can't tell what sort of damage has been done to the bottom of the shelf, but of course you'll want to repair THAT before you paint, and you will find, below, a link that tells you what to use to try to repair the wood, and how to go about painting it :) Good Luck Emma, and thanks for using HOMETALK for answers :)

I would paint it, not spray it. It's not that big, and if you spray it the color of the wood would be uneven. The spray would penetrate the wood in different areas. Lay the bookcase on its side and paint, let dry completely. Flip it over and paint the other side. This will also keep the paint from globbing up, and streaks. Next paint the inside of the shelves, this area won't be seen, as much as the outside. Use a high-gloss paint, so you can dust it off, and clean it with a very damp rag. Good Luck!

I would just replace that bottom fascia board and if you want to spray paint, use Fusion. It sticks really well to slick plastic like surfaces and will adhere to the new wood fascia board as well.

Never heard of fusion. Can you kindly tell me what it is and what is for? Thanks.

Is that real wood? It looks like maybe a laminate topping over a particle board and if that is the case, you probably need to go to a professional paint place to see what type of paint would cover that. If you just paint or spray it normally, it will quickly scratch off or even peal off unless properly treated prior to painting. Good luck and if you find out how to do it, please post here for all of us to learn how to do this also.

Spray paint now is available in a multimaterial formula that will stick on metal, wood, plastic, wood sealers.... pretty much anything. Wood damage can be filled with wood fillers or dough then sanded. Those products are ready for stain or paint.

Your cabinet is made with paper covered MDF board the cabinet can be painted with regular spray paint. That bottom board should be removed and painted and replaced. MDF can not stand water, if water is a problem in that area replace it with wood and painted, be sure to caulk around the base

It is spray paint made to adhere to plastic..I think its Krylon. You'll easily find it in any spray paint section. I'd try Walmart.

I just redid a shelf with similar bottom damage. I took a skill saw and cut off the ruined wood, then replaced the fascia with one from the upper shelf. It made the bottom shelf slightly shorter but you'd never even notice! Lastly, I dressed the front of the shelf that I robbed of the fascia with a 3/4 inch screen molding.

Remember to rough up the wood with sandpaper to give the surface a rougher surface for the paint to adhere to. You could paint with Kilz first to kill the wood from coming through the paint you decide to use.
