just make sure it is an enamel or you can use chalk, but it would have to be sealed to allow washing etc

Any paint should work, sand a bit first so that the paint sticks better.
Right now, chalk paint is very popular. Have you thought about that?
I always paint cabinets with oil based primer and paint. Seems to hold up much better than the latex paints.
