The type of paint to use while stenciling varies based on the project, the type of surface being stenciled and even the stencil itself. The right paint varies from latex to acrylic craft paint, fabric paint and even spray paint.
I use acrylic paints, sold in any crafts store, for all my stencilling. There are paints sold specifically for stencilling, but in my humble opinion, they don't work any better for their increased cost.
I agree, acrylic paint, even the cheaper kind bought at your local Walmart is the best paint to use for any type of stenciling. You can use regular acrylic paint on fabric as well. There is no need to buy fabric paint, all you do is stencil your fabric and when dry, press with a hot DRY iron. Place a cover over the fabric and press; that will set the paint. I 've done this for years with out a problem. And yes, you can use leftover latex wall paint to stencil just about anything except fabric. There is no need to buy special paints to stencil.
Acrylic paint is the way to go- I used it in my bathroom and it came out great!
I've always used acrylic paint when stenciling. However, I have used stenciling creams on furniture. Awesome! Have fun. Enjoy your project. Best of luck.
