Chalk paint requires no preparation (no sanding) you can just wipe off the furniture and paint it. You can buy chalk paint or make your own. It does need a polyurethane to finish it and keep it in good condition as it will chip or flake off with use in the home.
Just about any paint can be chalk paint if you add something dry to it which can add a little texture. Experiment with small batches of 10%-50% of plaster of Paris, borax, baking soda, salt, ground oatmeal, ground chalk, talc, cornstarch, etc. Unless there are splinters or other damage needing repairs, you can paint without sanding, and usually with only one coat. Sealing depends on what finish you want on top. Have fun! ☺️
