I Painted an Area Rug On My Carpet

We need a hearth rug in front of our pellet stove but the area rugs we'd been using tripped us up and the edges curled. Time to try something else! So, I painted a half moon hearth rug directly on the carpet.

Everything I used is from my stash so this project was FREE! Acrylic craft paint, textile medium, curlicue stencils and a brush and bowl. Yesterday I thoroughly cleaned and shampooed my carpet.

I measured then drew the half moon shape in front of the stove hearth. It is 36" wide and 18" deep. I used clear packing tape to mask the edge of the hearth. I used dark brown paint for the background then dabbed red paint right on top.

Using turquoise paint over the curlicue stencils, I covered the whole area with pretty blue designs. Already I like the way this looks!

I'm going to add a 2" wide border in turquoise and then add a few more stenciled curlicues in harvest gold, maybe more red and maybe dark brown? Then I'll spray it with Scotchguard.

Here is the expensive rug design I am trying to copy. So, I still have a ways to go.

I'll post photos when this project is finished. But for now, while I'm waiting for this first part to dry, I already like it! It is free, it is easy, it is colorful and it looks pretty! That's a win win to me!
