Yes, using polyurethane is a common technique. I have noted (per Pinterest) that someone painted their linoleum with KILZ interior primer and then with two coats of 'VELSPAR porch and floor latex / satin' (drying completely between each coat). They claim after 4 years of rugged laundry room use, the floor is still 'holding up perfectly.'
