Best way to refinish table top?

Question

Wanted to refinish maple dining room table painted all chairs and table legs table top is in good condition but would like to change the color make it darker! what is best way to achieve this?

I absolutely love the way I darkened the oak on this old home-made table (made with my daughter 15 years ago). I scrubbed a little TriSodium Phosphate mixed with water over the surface using a scotchbrite pad to degloss and clean. Then mixed a matte gray latex with water and brushed it on in long wood-like strokes. The watered-down effect created it's own variated action. Nervous. But it worked out nicely. I used several coats of matte wax varnish to protect finish. When we gouge the surface with rocks we collect -- ouch! -- I can clean, retouch and blend in a few minutes. Blendability is the beauty of working with textures rather than solid finishes. Are you wanting a darker wood color? Or a darker painted color? Howard's Restor a Finish is a great product for darkening wood. It is a wood conditioner, not a stain, and it really brings out the grain. If you use that, it will tell you to not poly, but for a tabletop surface, I would suggest using poly, as when its consistently exposed to air it will fade and you need to recondition it. You will need raw wood for that, no existing poly. But if your intent is to stain, you would need it stripped anyway.
