Can a tile floor be successfully painted?

I have an ugly tile floor that will be very costly to remove and replace (retailing on top is not an option). I’d like to paint it but don’t know if there’s any chance of success with that. Also, if I can paint, what’s the best process. I’m selling the house so am less worried about it lasting for many years - a couple of years would be fine. Thanks

You can pretty much paint everything these days with the right prep work and paint. But I have a question, why paint a surface that gets the most wear and tear? Why not break up the black by paint the vanity? It gets the least wear of the three. It would break up the black as well. If your heart is set on the floor make sure that you only use all cotton rugs no rubber so that with the humidity it doesn't ruin your floor when you go to lift them up to wash them.

Have you thought about a simple stencil design? Less work and less paint and you can buy a similar tile at store and try out paint or stencil. At least you can test it first and see if you like it and if you think it will hold up. Sorry I just thought about that because on this site a person did it and it looks great you can see or ask how it's holding up.

Yes it can. First you must clean it thoroughly with TSP and rinse, then let it dry. Then you will need to prime it. The trick here is to use a bonding primer, not your standard wall primer. Apply your bonding primer and let dry. Once your floor is dry you can paint it with any good quality paint.

There are several paints at Lowe’s or Home Depot that can be used as well as sealers. Check with their professionals.

I’ve been told they are made of clay. They measure approximately 4”x8” and are arranged in a herringbone pattern. They’re almost 1/2” thick and seem indestructible. They were installed about 30 years ago.
