Since it's not "on show," you could probably get away with using various colors of spray paint for a marbled or stone effect. Especially if it's a fairly low pile carpet. If it's shag, you'll have to experiment. But if it's that bad, couldn't get any worse.

Try it and see... the worst thing that can happen... is that you have to go shopping for a carpet remnant to replace it

The problem with trying to dye or paint a stained rug is that the stained areas with not absorb color the same degree of saturation as the better areas. You might luck out using various shade of paint for a marble effect, but I'm doubtful you will be pleased with the outcome. Why not remove the carpet and paint or stains the

    floor/concrete under it?

I had a similar problem with a light colored carpet. The tenant did not ever clean the rug the 5 years they lived there. I could not afford to tear up the carpet. I bought packs of grape koolaid and sponged the color in to carpet. I wanted a particular shade of purple so the kook aid was great. You van use any color.
