Clean and then used a deglosser product. Ten use primer and good oil based paint.

There is a paint kit called "cabinet paint" of all things. Not cheap, but better than replacement. Better job you do of cleaning the better result you will have. Sorry about the pain. This is the one I found on Amazon: Giani Granite - Nuvo Cabinet Paint, Driftwood

Make sure they are clean and dry. Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint with 120- to 220-grit sandpaper. Use a tack cloth or damp rag to remove dust after sanding. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123, KILZ,or BIN and have it tinted to the color of the top coat. This will prevent dark or stained surfaces from showing through the top coat. Acrylic, or water-base, paints are low-fume and clean up easily with water. Alkyd, or oil-base, paints require good ventilation because the paint contains solvents that can irritate your lungs and make you feel sick. Alkyd options require mineral spirits for cleanup, but they provide a hard, durable paint finish. Whichever you use, buy the best-quality paint you can afford for a lasting kitchen cabinet finish. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

This is exactly how I done mine. Used the KILZ

and water based paint. Two years ago and still looks good.

Rust-Oleum makes a kit for cabinets. I did mine and it was easy and they look great!

Big Box Stores sell special cabinet paint (selections for most surfaces) Must thoroughly degrease them to make sure paint adheres.

I updated my cream colored European style (wood on bottom edge) with white to match appliances. Had granite installed on counters to coordinate with tile floors. Painted backslash walls a cheerful color! Voila’ a new kitchen!

Hello Carol Campbell! I personally also prefer Kilz, but I like to recommend more than one option on any product.

You can make your own chalk paint that covers anything. Look online for receipe, and how to seal it.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. William's method sounds good, and even more so since Carol had a good experience using it, KILZ I mean. I will check on those kits for kitchen though, before I decide which way to go...

Two good paints for cabinets: Rustoleum's Cabinet Paint and Beyond Paint, which will do many surfaces we used to think couldn't be painted: Beyond Paint. No sanding, no prep or primer. Just paint.

I painted my kitchen counters...I cleaned them with krud kutter degreaser, then used a sanding sponge and lightly went over the surface.

I went to Benjamin Moore and got a primer and a paint called rust scat , it is a water based paint that dries hard like an enamel based paint. Things to know !!! It only cleans with water, if you clean it (brushes)

Right away !!! Also you need to make sure your primer is compatible with your paint , oil primer with oil paint , water based primer with water based paint. Good luck !!!!
