Make sure they are clean and dry. Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. yes, you can use many different kinds and brands of paint but be sure to clean piece well and sand it at least lightly! And wipe down after sanding to remove dust! The better the prep work the better your piece will turn out! I always use a good primer before painting even if paint has primer in it! Better safe then sorry!

Just came back to say that I don't find it necessary to use more than one coat (unless I have primed bare wood) these shelves have been painted probably 30 years, but this is probably oil paint as I used to use that always till they made the smell of oil paint noxious.
