Yes you can. You'll need to clean them really good with a degreaser and then sand them with 220 grit sand paper just enough so the paint will grab on. Then you can use chalk paint or I even used a laytex based paint. Seal with about 5 coats of poly.

If you're going from a dark color to a light color, I highly recommend after cleaning to use at least 1, preferably 2 coats of primer like Kilz. Especially in the kitchen where grease goes every where (even when you can't see it). I know you aren't supposed to have to prime when using chalk paint but I used chalk paint to paint the bottom part of a table from dark green to light green and it still took 3 coats of chalk paint go completely allow the light green to be the right color. Then as Tracy said, seal with poly to protect your work.

    Good luck!

Make sure they are clean and dry. Use acrylic latex paint. Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.
