Can I use a glaze over painted kitchen cabinets?

I am painting my kitchen cabinets a dark (Espresso) color. I love the color but not the flat, painted look they now have. Do not want the glaze to change the color or look antique-y. Wonder how using a glaze (dark if it comes in colors) would affect them, then plan to seal with polyacrylic

Ideally you should have painted them with at least a satin finish expresso paint as flat paint doesn't hold up to the constant washing and oils of the kitchen. But now that you've done it in flat paint, I would put a satin water-based poly over it to protect the paint and make it hold up over time. Glaze is used to add more color as in distressing and doing wood tones.

Sharon, thanks for responding so quickly. When I used the word flat I meant "non-dimensional". I did use a satin finish paint b/c of the washing etc. I was hoping that rubbing on a glaze would get rid of the "all-one-tone" painted look. As yet I've not put poly on. Maybe I should try that first. The satin w-b poly I have may do that.
