I have the same in my bathroom that I want to get rid of, how hard are they to get off the wall? Mine won't even hold an aluminum light weight towel rod and a single hand towel. You can paint almost anything. Clean it well, prime it, let dry and paint with compatible paint.... I. e. Latex with latex, oil based with oil based
