You can paint tile backsplashes, friend. You'll need to use a paint formulated especially for that use for the best results. Rustoleum and Giani Granite both make a product that's been pretty highly reviewed by customers.

There are epoxy paints that will stick to tile.
ask at Lowes or Home Depot - they can advise you
Benjamin Moore used to have a product called Fresh Start. It is a water based primer that will stick to ceramic tile...then paint over it.
