Can you paint an entire 8x10 black floral area rug white?

My area rugs are too dark for my black wood floors, and I do not want to tell the hubby I need new ones! 🤭 I’m hoping there is a way to lighten them up. Thank you

    Hi Missy,

I couldn't find even one article about painting a light color over dark carpeting, but I did find several about doing it on a wall. If you really want to try to do this, I would suggest that you pick up a dark color throw rug with similar pile to see if this works. I'd also suggest that you put fabric medium in the carpet paint (1:1 ratio) and sand between coats so that your carpet isn't stiff. Click on the link below to learn the best way to cover something dark so you can paint it light. If you decided to do this project, please take pictures and post it to Hometalk using the "Post Project" button on the top right of this page. With so few ideas out there it would be great to have a tutorial here on Hometalk. BTW, I didn't check a lot of pages for painting a dark rug a light color. It's possible there is something available past the first search page. Wishing you the best.

You can paint upholstery and rugs with Annie Sloan chalk paint. There are tutorials on u tube. I was surprised to find out an upholstered dining room chair I was sitting in at a friends house had been painted with Annie Sloan. I expected the fabric to be rough and scratchy, but it wasn't at all! Best of all it looked great!

I’ve used bleach to splash on material for a very cool look.. if you don’t like the rug anymore, you can try experimenting using a q-tip on a corner.

Looks like nice rugs. Unless you're a wizard with paint and planning the rugs could end up, ah, not exactly what you had expected. Then what? Fess up to hubby and sell the rugs and get ones you both like.

I wouldn't ruin that nice rug with ugly paint job. Maybe take it to a carpet store and have them add a light border around it. I had a friend do this for her period art deco home.
