How to add color to a plain white trim?

I recently bought a fixer upper and after deciding paint and carpet, decided I really hate the idea of plain white trim. How can I add color to trim without the room looking like a 3 year old colored it?

You could go with a stained trim....espresso or krona is really pretty...just be aware that it really visually darkens a room
Repainting the trim would be the best option.
you do have to paint it again. Keep in mind that you’ll be set for years using a good quality gloss or semi-gloss.

How would I choose a color? Do I go lighter or darker than the wall color or would I go with a completely different color? My walls are a darker shade of taupe.
I love the White, cause if ever you change color.you don’t need to paint them over. But white is so Class.
