Do I have to paint the chain to this chandelier?

I painted a chandelier while it hung in place as it is a tall ceiling and my husband did not want to take it down. I used Rustoleum Metallic Paint in a 2 ounce jar. Love it! I used two colors to get an oil rubbed bronze look. I think it looks fantastic. However, I can't take the whole thing down to replace the chain and chains are very hard to paint and get all the sides done. (And the old color was a very light color so any missed spots will show). I bought a cord cover but my husband thinks it's old fashioned. Does the chain have to match the light fixture? Thoughts? Medallion at the ceiling was painted so it is the darker color now.

Hi I don't see the photo but cord covers are not necessarily old fashioned. You could take it down and spray paint the chain by hanging it from a tree outdoors and spraying it from every direction.

Thanks for your reply! My husband doesn't want to take it all done since it is very high and heavy. I painted it in place but I don't know if I can effectively paint the chain in place with my brush on color.

I wish I could see a photo! The lighter chain may look ok. Maybe it blends more with your wall color? You’re right - it would stand out more if it was painted poorly. You can take the light down and spray it if it bothers you.

Sorry I don't have a photo. I would have done the chain by spray paint - although I created my "look" with these two brush on paints as I was doing smaller sconces first. I'm sure I could find a spray that would work - the issue is my husband doesn't want to take the whole wiring and everything down. It is quite high and heavy. My thought is I don't want it to look like a DIY gone bad. The fixture came out quite well and looks well done. Thanks for your input!

Best way to paint the chain is to pounce the paint on with a paint brush. This will get the paint in knooks and crannies. Then just go over the surface with the brush.

Hi Gina, if you are able to reach the entire length of the chain you could use a paint saturated small sponge to paint it. I've used this technique in the past for chains & wrought iron pieces that were nearly impossible to paint with a brush and simply squeezed the sponge around the entire chain as I worked from one end to the other. Hope this helps!

I think that will work! I do have a sponge "brush" and it should work! Thanks!

If you can't take the light down perhaps you could use a sponge and tap some paint on the cord while it is in place. Sort of hard to make a call without a photo but good luck and let us know how you handled this.

Add a glaze to it perhaps black, and rub off. Repeat to get a richer tone.

The chain doesn’t have to match! I would say leave it for now and if it bothers you, try to paint it

I would use a cord cover much easier than trying to replace the chain or painting it

UPDATE: My husband took pity on my fear of heights and went up and painted the chain by hand with a sponge brush! I tried the cord cover and it just didn't appeal to either of us. Thanks for all the input!

  • I don't think the chain has to match, but that's my personal opinion. It can be whatever you'd like it to be, do what makes you happy.

  • Personally. I would like the chain to match and would use a cover. Especially since the medallion matches the fixture.
