Yes, paint the brick white. My Dad has a fireplace and his girlfriend painted the mantle white and left the bricks the original color. It looked terrible. Once she painted the bricks white...it looked so much better and really brightened up the room!

NO ---NEVER paint the brick. This will decrease he resale value. This is just a trend that will quickly go out of style. People like brick for its beauty and no maintenance value . BUT GET new mantel. It can change up everything. Natural red brick is classic and NEVER goes out of style. But your accessories can also be a game changer.
Rather than paint the brick, I would whitewash it so some depth comes out. WIth the white walls behind and the light wood floor it might looke washed out if you did a solid cover of white. I think after that a white surround would look really nice.
