Thin the paint down with water, lightly brush onto the wood. If it’s thicker than you want, take a rag and wipe iff some of the surface pa8nt

It sounds like you are talking about a whitewash or picklewash. You can thin downt he paint with water or a medium for thinning paint, or you can paint it on raw wood and lightly sand until some of the wood shows through.
