Fix any imperfections, wash the walls with TSP. Walls need to be clean and dry before starting. Then tape off, lay drop cloth and begin prime coat (s), then paint.
Dust the walls, then prime paint.
Naomie is one step ahead me. Perfect instructions. Use a good stain blocking primer like Kilz or BIN.
I always give them a good wash with a degreaser and a car sponge. I use Dollar Tree Awesome Orange in the half gal in hot water wearing kitchen rubber gloves as its drying to hands. Then bust out the Awesome Degreaser with a plastic round scrubby if you hit a touch grease gunk. Works everytime for me..... never had to repaint a wall.
Clean with tsp, sand, wipe down, let dry overnight, prime and paint. Be sure to use some dap and fix any holes.
