My bathroom is out dated with oak cabinets.Whats the best paint to use?
We've painted cabinets with a variety of paints. Melamine paints hold up very well. Whatever you choose, give the whole piece a light sanding to rough up the old finish and give the new paint something to stick to. Prime it before you apply your main paint colour too.
The brand of paint is not nearly as important as prepping your piece before painting. I love working with chalk paint, but I would recommend lightly sanding your cabinets before applying

You can buy paint that doesn't require sanding. It' been 10 years since I painted so I don't remember the name. I painted over 70's cheap paneling. It still looks great, today. I bought my paint from Home Depot but I'm sure Lowe's would have it, too.
Instead of painting and covering the beauty of the woodgrain why don't you stain it? It will cover the outdated oak color yet the woods grain will still show thru. We had ugly oak kitchen cabinets that we stained a beautiful black ebony stain that already had the varnish in it so we saved the step of brushing shellac/varnish on it after staining. So we were able to stain and varnish all in one step. The oak color is gone but the woodgrain is not covered. I prefer stain over paint any day. Why hide the beauty of the wood with paint?
I just did my bathroom cabinets as well as the medicine cabinet inside and out on that one. The key is taking the sheen off and priming it. an oil base primer is better. After you paint it, make sure you clear coat it. that stops the paint from peeling etc. especially in a kids bathroom.
I used Sherwin Williams paint and used a sprayer to paint the bathroom vanity. It does not need to be sealed. And it looks great 5 years later. No peeling or chipping.
Just did mine with Behr Alkyd paint. No primer needed, no sealer needed, cleans up with soap and water (YAY!) and looks like it came from the manufacturer after 2 coats. Apply with sponge dense foam roller and sponge brushes. Sand lightly or degloss prior to painting. Love my new vanity!!!
