Sep 16, 2018 - Paint the Paneling. Once the primer is dry, apply a thin coat of your paint to the entire surface. Begin at the top and work your way down, making sure to cover all the gaps between the panels. Watch for and remove any excess paint that gathers between the panel grooves with your brush.
Make sure the paneling is clean and dry. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123, BIN or Kilz. Then paint like painting regular walls. Acrylic latex paint will work. If the paneling has grooves you can fill them with non shrink drywall patching compound. Just put on enough to fill the grooves. Let it dry overnight. Next day use a damp sponge to smooth the patch. Then prime and paint.
Depending on the finish, you may be able to clean with TSP as your only prep. Then prime with Original Kilz and paint. That is what I did about 15 years ago and it has held up great.
I went to Sherwin Williams. The primer they suggested for our old paneling was perfect. Two coats and looks like a new room! Every paneling is different so just ask the expert
You've gotten a lot of good advice. As I read over the answers there is one that stood out. As a matter of fact it was the reason I read all of the answers because it is what I did. William is the only one who mention what I did. I had a room with paneling on one wall. I wanted to use that wall as an accent wall so I filled in all of the grooves with a non-shrinking dry wall patching compound. After it dried, I used a damp sponge to make sure it was flat and blended in with the rest of the paneling. In my case, I then used wallpaper to cover that wall, but you could certainly paint it. Just pay close attention to how your fill in those lines. Prep is key to great results! Wishing you the best.
I want to use wallpaper over my paneling also ! Did you have to prime it or anything other than filling in the grooves and smoothing once dried? Ive been putting off this project til I could find the answer ! Thanks !
Yes, I did prime it Ahilly. Mainly because of the lines. The paneling was very light, but I figured that the primer would help. If I remember right, I also used sizing on the wall before putting on the wallpaper. It was over 20 years ago that I did this and it still looks good, although I think it's time for a change. LOL

If it's real wood=Sand, prime with oil based primer, lightly sand again and paint with 2 coats of oil based paint. Enjoy your new room.
