Wash it first with Murphy’s oil soap and a wrap that will take it off let dry one day then you should be able to paint no problem
I would lightly sand it and paint it with chalk paint. That stuff is amazing and fun to use. You can get so many finishes, ie. antiquing, solid colors, etc. The varnish shouldn't be the problem but if there was oil in the "polish" sanding would help. Chalk paint adheres to pretty much everything. If you buy it as chalk paint it can be expensive...$30-35 a qt. But you can make your own.
