Oil based Kilz or no?

    Plain water based kilz (or any primer/sealer) will work fine

    Oil based not necessary and too much clean-up- unless you already have it and don’t want to buy more primer.

    A cheap PVA primer should be fine, unless you’ve something that’s going to bleed through the primer, then go for a stain blocking primer.

      Have some oil based on hand and cheap sponge brushs. that may be the route that I go.

    Water based primer will work for a patch. Oil based for fresh drywall and stains.
