I would put up cement board first. Then adhere the tile onto the board. I always put a small screw on wall tile to hold in place until the adhesive dries. Once that's done, grout and seal after grout is completely dry.

I would recommend laying out the pattern you want on the counter first.

Keep in mind that unless the surface that you are planning to install the tiles on to is not level,(or if it is bowed) it will cause problems with being able to secure the tiles to the wall so they stay attached without cracking or popping off.

You could look for peel and stick tiles in the style you want, those are easy for sure. Or, if you're willing to learn to tile, it's not hard and you'll be so proud of the accomplishment. The hardest part is cutting them and you can likely rent the tool to do it. There are lots of online tutorials, even here on Hometalk. Try the search bar at the top left.

It's really no different than putting up other tiles, however, cutting tile isn't easy. You either need a hand tool which is labor intensive or a wet saw. No matter whether you use peel and stick or traditional install, I would lay out the pattern so that you limit your cuts.
