Spray Painting a Painted Louvered Door

Spray painting louvered doors is an option that requires a little more prep work but cuts down on the dry time.

Tape (or remove) handles and hinges. You can paint the hinges but if you decide not to, it’s best to remove all hardware that you want to stay clean. Not only does this save you the time of taping and possibly cleaning them afterward, but it takes having to paint around them out of the equation.

Take the door off the hinges and remove, or tape over, any of the hardware. Place the door in a well-ventilated area, preferably outside. Lay down a drop cloth and place the doors on this as painting flat will help reduce drips.

You will need to scrape off the old paint to ensure an even coating and prevent buildup. This is a necessary step even if you are painting it the same color. Take a paint scraper or hand sander and remove the paint from the slats and the border.

Start by spraying from top to bottom in a quick, even motion. Do not hold the spray can in one place as this will cause pooling. The corners of the slats are more susceptible to this so have a small brush handy.

Light even coats are the way to go here. You will be covering up any unevenness with the second coat of paint.

Dust and clean really well. You can rinse with minimal water if they are wood. Let dry thoroughly or paint will bubble. If you have a sprayer, I have a wagner, you can use exterior spray paint. ight coats. Let each side dry completely. If not, use Rustoleum, lay the doors on a horizontal saw horse, Spray light coats to avoid drips

Just don't attempt to paint when it is 90° or above. Also try for the least humid day. Both affect the finished product.

Hi Kimmi, i would use a spray cleaner on them, spray undiluted onto them, let sit for a minute then rinse thoroughly and let dry. Once you are sure they are dry, apply your first coat on the inside of the doors, let dry fully, flip over and do the same for the outside, let dry, then repeat. be sure to feather your spray so you don't get runs, good luck!!

Dust really well or vacuum with an upholstery brush attachment. Use the paint sprayer in a shady spot on a day its not windy. Remember to do 2-3 LIGHT coats of paint moving rom bottom to top of the louvers at no closer than 10-12 inches away.

For exterior....Rustoleum recommendations

PREPARE:

Always work in a well-ventilated area. Cover the floor and nearby items with a drop cloth. Lightly scuff any glossy surfaces and wipe clean with a lint-free cloth. Use Painter’s tape to hide any surfaces you don’t want to paint.

PAINT:

Using slow, back-and-forth motions, spray paint each item with several light coats of spray paint, making sure to overlap each stroke slightly. Apply 2-3 coats of spray paint, waiting a few minutes in between each coat.

FINISH:

Let spray paint dry for approximately 1 hour before handling.

Tip: Use of 2X Ultra Cover Primer in White provides better paint coverage and color.

Hi Kimmi. Begin by using a clean dry brush to brush off any dust and residue. Then moisten a cloth with white spirit and wipe the door to remove any small particles. The white spirit is used instead of water as this gets rid of any grease that may have been transferred from your hands. It will evaporate quickly. I think a sprayer would be the best tool for this project. It would require less paint. Good luck Kimmi.

Hi! Cleaning them thoroughly is important. I always vacuumed mine first, so the dust didn't turn into mud when wet. Remove any hardware you don't want to get paint on. Since you are painting them, I would use a soft scrub brush and really scrub them well with a product like Krudkutter. Rinse and then let dry completely. Any glossy areas may need to be lightly sanded so the paint adheres better. When dry and dust free, spray in light coats, moving back and forth. You don't want to apply too much at once, because it will sag and leave drips. It is better to do several light coats with spray paint. Good luck and stay safe!

Clean with TSP and let dry. Then you should be good to go.

I would clean them first with TSP and warm water ( you can find it at Walmart, Home Depot etc in the paint aisle it usually is in a box or bag) follow directions then let them dry well then spray paint both sides
