How to use masking taper properly when painting?

I put masking tape on skirting boards a few days after painting them so I could then paint walls in different colour. But when I removed the tape it took the paint off the skirting boards in lots of places. How can I avoid this happening please?

You need to use either blue or green painters tape. Low tag adhesive won't pull off paint. Color of tape is generally manufacturer specific.

In addition to using blue or green tape, remove just before it's completely dry.

Removing just before the paint is completely dry will give sharp edges, according to company ads. ☺️

I was told by a professional that you have to let paint cure before you can apply tape to it. I asked because the same thing happened to me

I'm going to agree with all of the above. Use painters tape. It's designed to have less tack so it should not pull off paint. It should be removed right away, you don't want the paint to dry if paint that has dribbled across the tape dries it may pull the new paint off. Latex is stretchy as it dries and you can pull quit a bit off. As Violet mentioned paint takes a while to cure, not just dry to the touch. It's on the can to wait until cured before doing anything to the paint.

How can you tell when it's cured?

You need to run the tape over fabric first ie your clothes, @ piece of furniture. This was told to me by my art teacher. This stops the tape lifting what's underneath. The tape I am referring to, is the common thin white and the think light bone. This really workes! Hope this helps Kay Adelaide Australia

Nothing happened. Masking tape is outdated in the world of paint. Even the blue stuff isn't that hot. Get the green Frog tape. It it formulate to make a gel barrier when it gets wet with paint and works much better. I had issues also with texture in walls. I finally just slowly hand painted and it came out great.
