Kitchen paint probably just means it's a washable semi gloss. That should be fine as long as you follow Janet's guidelines. A really good latex enamel gloss or semi gloss probably won't require a sealant as long as you properly prepped before painting.
OK to use the paint. AND no to varnish. It yellows over time. Use at least three coats of a water base polyurethane.
